Do That Thing You’ve Always Wanted to Do

About 15 years ago, I begged my parents for a sewing machine. I didn’t know how to sew, but I loved the idea of it. I wanted to learn though I never did and so after a few uses of basically sewing together pieces of fabric squares, it ended up back in its box never to be used again. Until now.

Two weeks ago, I decided it was time to dig out my sewing machine from my parents basement. I always loved the idea of making clothes for my kids and potentially selling children’s clothing and accessories, what better a time than now, right? I have a 1 month old and a 2 and 3 year old and zero time to do anything BUT we’re in the middle of a pandemic and stuck in the house, so I’m going to better utilize nap time. Call me crazy!

I’d thought about my sewing machine several times over the past few years but never thought I had the time to learn to sew or actually sew and really, I didn’t think I’d be any good at it so it sort of got pushed aside. Fast forward to now and the dent in my credit cards that my sweet baby girls bow collection is making and – eek. “I can make these,” I’ve thought to myself on many occasions and so it was time to try.

I unpacked my sewing machine and ran on over to Joann’s (so grateful they’re finally open for actual shopping)! I also may have placed a few orders with some online fabric shops and Amazon to grab a few necessities. I now have a pretty decent collection of tools and feel ready to work!

Okay, now I know that sewing is not the most challenging thing on earth to do, especially the pieces I’m making but guys, I’m not bad and I’m REALLY enjoying it. I’ve never really been great at a particular thing or had a hobby per se. I’ve loved crafting of all sorts but never found a particular area to sort of stick to and I think this is it. (I’m really excited!)

So my point is, if theres’s something you want to try, whether you think you’d be good at it or not, now is the time! Just do it. TRY!

I wish I would have started doing this sooner but am so glad that I finally did. So far I’ve only made bummies, bows and hats (and a completely failed shirt) but am excited to explore, expand and improve!

When I tell you I knew nothing about sewing two weeks ago, I knew NOTHING (and now am kind of in love). I didn’t even know what a sewing pattern was (that bad!). And so I taught myself how to do this completely on my own and feel pretty good about continuing to teach myself more. Trust me, you can do anything and do it well if you put in the effort.

And so to add to the excitement, years ago when my hubby and I lived in Orlando, I played around with the idea of a boutique and selling some handmade things (more in the realm of using my Cricut). I even went so far as creating an LLC which I ended up closing because I obviously did not get to do anything with it (planning a wedding, moving across the country and then getting pregnant took precedent). I’m going to jump in and give it a true shot and I’m even going to stick with the same name and also use my Cricut for some items. I’m so excited to share more with you when the time is right! Until then, here’s a little peek at my messy dining room which has become my workspace.

So tell me, is there something you’ve been wanting to try but have put off? Or did you take the plunge and do it? Tell me about it and if you haven’t jumped in – do it! You got this!

XO,
